Sheila Mitchell decided to become a physician in fourth grade, inspired by her teacher, Mrs. Beard, and the reading material she introduced to the class on Florence Nightingale, Jane Addams and Clara Barton. She is the first in her family to enter into the medical field.
Dr. Mitchell believes that communication and the patient/physician relationship are extremely important in the healing process. In her view, treating the whole person, including body, mind and spirit lead to much better healing and optimal wellness. To that end, she is not only Board Certified in Family Medicine, but has studied and is certified in Integrative Holistic Medicine as well as in Foundations in Herbal Medicine with Dr. Low Dog. She is a careful listener and open to discussions on different modalities of healing, combining her technical, up to date Family Medicine background along with her knowledge of other systems of healing. She specializes in complex medical problems, including diabetes, thyroid disorders and hormone therapy.
After having completed undergraduate studies at UCLA, she started part of her medical training in Mexico City and is therefore fluent in Spanish. She finished her internship and residency at LA County Hospital/USC. Sheila owned her own clinic for 15 years with a model similar to GreenField Health, where she also brought together massage therapists, acupuncturists, physical therapists and naturopaths, along with MD’s and Nurse Practitioners to collaborate together on patient care.
Given her connection to Central and South America, she leads groups to these areas and particularly to the Amazon to learn about the culture, customs and medicinal ways of indigenous peoples. Sheila also collaborates with local healers in these areas to bring supplies and treat patients. In her spare time, she loves to hike, kayak, garden, write and spend time with her beloved grandchildren.
